Weekly Update 9/15

Hey Troop 19,

The Troop will meet tomorrow at the Moose Lodge. The Troop Committee meets TONIGHT on Zoom at 7PM! 

If you missed the early sign up deadline for October’s Presidents Trail Camporee, you can still sign up! The cost is now $40 to sign up and you can do that at a Monday meeting or by sending me an email. There is plenty of room for more of you! 

Here’s everything going on: 

  • Troop Meeting Tomorrow – At the Braintree Moose Lodge
    • 175 W Howard St, Braintree, MA 02184 in the function room in the rear of the building
    • Pre-opening activities start at 6:30pm, you should be arriving as close to 6:30 as possible!
    • Opening ceremony at 7PM. Closing ceremony and announcements at 8:15PM
    • Class A uniforms for regular Troop meetings!

  • Adult Leader Training Opportunities:
    • Clicking here will bring you to the Mayflower Council training calendar. We will highlight specific training courses within and outside of our local council below but you may find other courses of interest by checking the council calendar yourself, especially as future courses are added. 
    • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) – Required for ASMs to be “Trained” optional but encouraged for Committee Members.
    • Wood Badge 2025 – The ultimate adult leader training course for all who have complied their basic “position trained” requirements.
      • Offered by Heart of New England Council at TREASURE VALLEY over 2 weekends in September and October 2025: https://commerce.hnebsa.org/event/wood-badge-2025/ 
      • This course has a super early bird discount if registered by DECEMBER 31st! The Troop Committee will discuss adding our own subsidy for Troop 19 adults who register and complete this Wood Badge course. 
    • BSA Basic Chainsaw Safety – REQUIRED to use a chainsaw on a Scouting property or event
    • CPR/AED Training – Our council hosts Red Cross CPR/AED courses regularly. They are hosted at various locations throughout the council.
    • Wilderness & Remote First Aid Training at Nobscot – Courses in November, January, March, April, June & next November: https://scoutingevent.com/251-WRFA2024
      • This is a more in-depth course than traditional first aid trainings and is focused on situations where access to emergency response can be delayed, such as on a backcountry high adventure trek. 
    • Stay tuned. We will add more as we hear about them! 
  • Troop 19 Eagle Scouts – Have you filled out the Eagle contact info form yet? 
  • Contact Info: All communication between a single Scout and an adult leader must include at least one additional adult CC’d on the email to comply with the BSA Youth Protection guidelines prohibiting one-on-one contact between adults and youth. Scouts, you can always add either Brian, Jim or Sam to help us with this.

SEPTEMBER PARADE! Weymouth Irish Heritage Day Parade

We were invited to march in the Weymouth Irish parade on Sunday, September 22nd. They are excited to have us marching and this will be a great way to get our Troop out in front of the community we serve. 

The parade starts at 11AM on Union Street. We will assemble in advance (line up time 8:30-10:15AM, we will give you a specific time soon) at the Hamilton School, 400 Union Street Weymouth

Keep an eye out for more details but plan to be there!

Weekly Update 9/1

Hey Troop 19,

Summer Camp STAFF and SCOUTS – I sent emails out last Saturday and again during the past week with a link to a feedback survey for adult staff and a feedback survey for all Scouts who attended camp. Please submit your feedback by September 1st or give us feedback in-person when you see us over the next couple of weeks!

Speaking of Summer Camp, put August 9th to 16th into your calendar for next year RIGHT NOW. We have tentatively set those dates to return to Treasure Valley in 2025 and we want YOU to be there with us. 

Adults – info has been added below about upcoming training opportunities: IOLS for ASMs (and others) in November and a Wood Badge course being offered NEXT fall at Treasure Valley!

Weekly Updates 8/25

Hey Troop 19,

We will meet at the Weymouth Sons of Italy tomorrow for some school-yard style sports competitions AND to sort of the Troop trailer for the next campout. We are watching the weather, assuming storms have safely exited the area by 6PM, we will continue with this plan. Keep an eye on email and the Troop Remind group for last minute changes. 

If we are unable to unload the trailer on Monday night due to weather, we will need to find another night THIS WEEK to take care of this so plan to make yourself available if this happens. 

Sign up for the Labor Day campout! It will be NEXT  weekend at Wompatuck State Park in Scout Campsite #1. This is our annual program planning campout and ALL SCOUTS should try to attend the campout. Even if you cannot stay for the entire time, most of the brainstorming and planning for what YOUR program will be for the next year will happen during the DAY on Saturday. The cost is $20 to stay for the full campout or $10 if you just stay for the day (lunch and dinner) on Saturday. We will be camping from Friday night until mid-afternoon on Sunday. 

Sign up for the Labor Day campout at the Troop activity tomorrow or by email NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY NIGHT. Let us know if you are staying for the entire campout or just for the day on Saturday. 

We will also be going to the Presidents Trail Camporee in Quincy on Columbus Day weekend in October. See the attached form for sign up information. There is an early sign up deadline of September 9th, please follow this deadline. You can sign up by email to me by providing the info on the paper form,

Troop Activity Monday – 8/26

We will meet up at the Weymouth Sons of Italy (54 Whitman St) for a combination of 2 activities. The Scouts are planning a schoolyard style parking lot sports competition and we also need to unload and reload the Troop trailer to transition from Summer Camp to regular weekend campout. 

We are watching the weather and may need to make a quick change. Assuming storms have safely exited the area by 6PM, we will continue with this plan. Keep an eye on email and the Troop Remind group for last minute changes. 

We will be up there from 6:30-8:30PM 

No Meeting on Labor Day (9/2) – First Troop Meeting of Scouting Year on 9/9

Upcoming Camping – Labor Day Weekend Campout & Annual Planning – Labor Day Weekend

All Scouts should plan to attend this campout. If you cannot stay for the entire weekend, come for the day and participate in YOUR annual planning.

We will be tenting in SCOUT SITE #1 at Wompatuck State Park (campsite next to the paved lot adjacent to the “Transfer Station” building, which is on the opposite side of the road just after the entrance to the public campground.

$20 for the full weekend or $10 for day-only Saturday (lunch and dinner)

TIMING: We will be at the campground from Friday night starting at 6:30PM until Sunday AFTERNOON at 2PM. 

Much of the annual planning effort will take place on Saturday however there will be opportunities for both fun activities and advancement work on this campout. 

If you can’t make it to the Troop activity tomorrow but want to sign up, just send me an email by WEDNESDAY NIGHT and either Venmo your payment to Carolyn or bring cash with you to the campout to pay. 

Presidents Trail Camporee – Columbus Weekend October 12-14 

We have been invited to this exciting local opportunity in historic Quincy MA. It will be Saturday to Monday on the holiday weekend. 

There is an early sign up deadline of 9/9 with a $30 fee. This fee increases after the deadline to cover the late charges for camporee registration.

Weekly Update

Hey Troop 19,

If you have any Summer Camp business to take care of this week, send me an email and I will make arrangements to get that from you. 

The following 2 Monday nights, we will meet at the Weymouth Sons of Italy, where our storage container is now located, to finalize our preparations for Summer Camp.

Next Monday night will be our usual pre-camp meeting and cookout, along with prep work for camp. The following Monday will be a final camp prep and trailer loading meeting. 

We are on the home stretch for camp preparations. We are no longer accepting adult camp sign ups. We WILL still accept Scout sign ups for camp if you have a late change to your summer plans. If you owe us an updated medical form or any required paperwork for camp, please take care of that ASAP. 

Everything you need to know to BE PREPARED for camp is in the info packet. There is a packing list, a set of expectations and policies and more! Adult staff members, keep an eye out for an email from us soon with a brief survey included to help us finalize our plans for camp.
